Jimmy Smith may be known by the younger generation of music fans as being the man who wrote the song "Root Down", which in 1992 was sampled by the Beastie Boys for a hit single of the same name. What they probably don't realize is that Smith was a pioneer in the field of jazz and funk, a master of the Hammond Organ, and developed a musical style all his own.

Of course, just because you develop a style that's all your own doesn't mean you didn't still perform other artist's songs. It was standard practice at them time. Here Jimmy does a beautiful version of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together", from 1972's 'Root Down Live!'. He injects his own brand of soul into a song that's already teeming with it.
