Beatlemania is runnin' WILD, brother!!!

BUTCHER

So I got the new MOJO today (by the way, has anyone EVER finished one of their crosswrod puzzles? I mean, without cheating) and its got a great story about the Beatles' 'Revolver'. I took this as a good opportunity to do a post I've been meaning to do for a while, my Beatles covers post.

The Breeders "Happiness Is A Warm Gun"

The Pixies "Wild Honey Pie"

This will probably be a two or three parter, as there are a LOT of great Beatles covers. In this part, we have the Breeders' minimalistic version of "Happiness Is A Warm Gun", always one of my top picks. Kim Deal gets another one here, this time with the Pixies, on their psychotic version of "Wild Honey Pie" from 'Pixies At The BBC', the best Pixies collection put out anywhere, ever.

Motley Crue "Helter Skelter"

Tenacious D "Beatles Medley"

Frank Zappa "I Am The Walrus"

[right click to download]

You'd think Motley Crue doing "Helter Skelter" might suck, but not if its from 'Shout At The Devil'. Its so ridiculous it works. Speaking of ridiculous, maybe my favorite entry here is Tenacious D doing their "Beatles Medley". It's their take on the end of 'Abbey Road' and it's hilarious. Frank Zappa provides "I Am The Walrus" here and i'm not sure if its this version that actually contains John Lennon performing it with him. I know one of them does.

Jimi Hendrix "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"

But the best prize of all here is Jimi Hendrix doing his version of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". I remember the story of how the album cam out on a tuesday and he played this song on thursday, or something like that. Rumour has it Hendrix recorded his own version of the "Sgt. Pepper" record, except his was called "Lieutenant Pepperloin's Dark Chocolate Ass Patrol".

Elvis Costello "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away"

Sonic Youth "Within You Without You"

[right click to download]

To round things out, Elvis Costello gives a beautiful (as always) portrayal of "You've Got To Hide Yr Love Away" and Sonic Youth does a- well, a Sonic Youth version of "Within You Without You". Its beautiful and spacey. And to think that "Within You Without You" is the one song i always used to skip over.

Look, I just don't like sitars. Deal with it.
