    McCULLOUGH's MP3 OF THE WEEK 002: 03.06.2006

    Title: "I Only Want You"
    Artist: Eagles Of Death Metal
    Album: Peace Love Death Metal
    Year: 2004

The Eagles Of Death Metal are a two-piece outfit;; Josh Homme (Kyuss, Queens Of The Stone Age, Desert Sessions) drums the drums, and the mustachioed Jesse "Devil" Hughes strums the guitar and sings. Very simple rock, almost reminiscent of the Shite Stripes. "I Only Want You" is the lead off track to 'Peace Love Death Metal' and it makes sense, as the song is straight ahead power pop in it most glorious arrangement.

I saw these guys for the first time at a Hurricane Katrina Benefit where they opened for Tenacious D. I didn't think much of them at the time, they played this song and two others I think. Now I'm a fan of Josh Homme's other projects (particularly Queens' 'Rated R'), but this one seems to really belong to Hughes. He's the frontman with a sense of showmanship, and much like Prince, he's pretty good at dancing and playing the guitar simultaneously. They do not sound like the Eagles (thank GOD, my most hated band of all time), nor is it death metal (too bad, i guess, i've really been digging Cannibal Corpse lately, if only for their seriously disturbed song titles), it's a party song, and with this list I'm trying to keep shit simple.

This is one of those records I always meant to pick up as soon as i heard of it, but just never got around to (as you can see it came out in 2004). I kept reading blurbs about it here and there, constantly reminding myself "oh yeah, next time i'm at amoeba, next time". Well finally I just downloaded it, and I didn't even get the whole album. In fact I think they have made a whole 'nother record since. Obviously it's not my favorite band of all time. Catchy little ditty, though. Makes you wanna dance. Sue me Jack.
